World Heritage for Bali

As reported by the National News Agency Antara, the decision, reached by UNESCO on Friday, June 29, 2012, officially declared the subak irrigation and water distribution systems characterized by the picturesque rice terraces of western Bali as playing a central role in preserving Balinese culture.

This system controlled by local Subak area coordinaters ensures water from the high areas of Bali is distributed to rice farmers throughout Bali, not only when they need it for rice planting & growing but in the water quantity required for these tasks.

It is a unique system of reservoirs, channels and sub channels throughout the rice growing areas and is only found in Bali

Subak is not only a farming system, it also embraces tradition and religion in its practice. Within the subak system, Balinese farmers regulate their water usage for irrigating their rice paddies and plantations in a fair and effective way. The subak system also incorporates various traditional and religious activities to support the agricultural community of Bali.
